Winter Training Wraps Up, Oakland Visits Irish On Saturday

Jan. 11, 2008

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – After returning from its annual winter training session in Florida, the Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team will challenge Oakland in dual meet action Saturday at the Rolfs Aquatic Center. The meet is slated to start at 12:30 p.m. (ET).

While in Florida the Irish battled LSU on a Jan. 1 dual meet in Ft. Lauderdale, falling to the Tigers by a 167-95 margin. A pair of swimmers claimed first-place victories in the losing effort. Sam Pendergrast was first in the 100 Breast (57.46), and John Lytle was ahead of the pack in the 100 Free (46.35).

On the diving side Michael Bulfin earned a scored of 304.8 in the 1-meter event against Miami, with Sam Stoner (290.7) and Eric Lex (279.3) coming in third and fourth, respectively. Stoner (320.93) was the top man in the 3-meter showing and Bulfin (308.63) was next in line.

“The purpose of the winter training trip is to train as intensely as possible while class is not in session, and to make our final preparations for the BIG EAST and NCAA tournaments,” said head coach Tim Welsh. “It’s a very demanding time, athletically, and the team looks forward to it.

“I thought the trip went as well as we could hope for. I thought the training was excellent, and the improvement was significant. Our LSU meet showed that even in the midst of hard training and travel that we’ll be okay. There is a consistency and a resiliency to this team.”

“We are going to have four meets in fourteen days. All of them will be intense. We could swim very well and still be anywhere from 4-0 to 0-4 when it’s all said and done. After this flurry of meets it’ll get quiet until the BIG EAST Championship. So it is a very important stretch for us.”
