April 23, 2012

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Sophomore pitcher Laura Winter has been named BIG EAST Conference Softball Player of the Week, as announced by the league Monday.

Winter pitched a no-hitter against DePaul and earned a 4-0 record in four appearances last week. The San Diego, Calif., native blanked the Blue Demons in the first of a three-game series as the Irish would go on to post their first sweep of DePaul since 2006.

Along with posting the first no-hitter ever at Melissa Cook Stadium, Winter pitched 19.1 scoreless innings from the circle in four appearances last week and held DePaul to only one earned run in 20.2 innings. Over the course of her four appearances, Winter went 19.1 innings without allowing an earned run.

Winter’s winning performances also helped move Notre Dame (26-13 overall, 8-3 BIG EAST) to fourth place in the conference standings.

Junior catcher Amy Buntin was part of the league’s weekly honor roll after hitting .429 with a 1.143 slugging percentage last week. Buntin totaled six hits, nine RBI and six runs scored.
