Winners Of Irish Prize Raffle Announced

Dec. 9, 2004

The five winners of the University of Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team’s prize raffle were announced at last weekend’s Notre Dame Invitational, at which the Irish finished first by nearly 1,600 points. The names were drawn from all those people who had purchased tickets for the raffle in hopes of winning one of the Notre Dame-themed prizes. The raffle raised money to defray costs for the team’s training and competition trip to Ireland this winter.

The winner of the raffle’s grand prize of two game tickets, two airline tickets, and two-night hotel accommodations (one room) for a 2005 Notre Dame football game of his choice was Chuck Griffin of Covert, Mich.

Second prize – a pair of game tickets, two airline tickets, and one-night hotel accommodation (one room) to a 2005 spring-semester basketball game of her choice – went to Linda Shaffer of Seneca Falls, N.Y.

The third-place winner – Sean Downes of Boca Raton, Fla. – took home an original oil painting of Notre Dame’s Main Building, affectionately dubbed the “Golden Dome,” rendered by South Bend artist Jacqueline Welsh, the wife of long-time Irish men’s swimming and diving head coach Tim Welsh.

Officially licensed team-issued Notre Dame adidas gear, the raffle’s fourth prize, went to B. Heffernan of Blue Island, Ill.

Fifth prize – a football autographed by former Irish head coach Tyrone Willingham and a basketball autographed by Notre Dame mentor Mike Brey – was won by Ryan Schoonveld of St. Joseph, Mich.

The Irish men’s swimming and diving trip to Ireland, which will include stops in Dublin and Limerick for both training and competition, is slated for Dec. 29, 2004-Jan. 9, 2005.
