Welsh Re-Elected To ASCA Board Of Directors

Sept. 13, 2013

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – University of Notre Dame men’s swimming head coach Tim Welsh has been re-elected to the American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA) board of directors, as announced during the 2013 ASCA World Clinic that was held Sept. 3-8 in New Orleans, La.

Welsh, beginning his second term on the organization’s board, will remain in the capacity over the next three years.

“Serving the American Swimming Coaches Association, on its board, it’s a privilege, it’s a joy and it’s an opportunity I treasure,” Welsh said. “I believe in the organization, I am committed to its educational goals, and to have a chance to do that again on its board is a thrill for me.”

Welsh, entering his 37th season as a Division I swimming head coach and his 29th season at Notre Dame, completed a two-year term as president of the ASCA in 2011. He was bestowed with the ASCA’s distinguished Ousley Service Award in 2004, and the ASCA Fellows Program set in motion by Welsh, designed to professionally and thoroughly prepare younger swimming coaches to flourish as the sport’s future coaching leaders, has been universally championed.

Welsh was presented the Richard E. Steadman Award by the College Swim Coaches Association (CSCA) in 1993, given annually to a swimming or diving coach in the club, high school or university ranks that has done the most to spread happiness and joy in the sport.

He later received the Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Distinguished Service Award in 2009, presented in recognition of his 35 years of service to college coaching. Notre Dame proudly conferred its Presidential Achievement Award to Welsh that same year, an honor that recognizes a University employee who lives the University’s mission and is a role model exemplifying all of Notre Dame’s core values.

Welsh was a six-time BIG EAST Conference Coach of the Year selection during Notre Dame’s tenure in the league, leading the Irish to conference championship victories in 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2012 and 2013. Notre Dame enters its first season as an Atlantic Coast Conference affiliate during the upcoming 2013-14 season.

“ASCA has been the key professional organization in my life,” Welsh said. “It’s been responsible for a lot of my coaching education, and has afforded me opportunities to grow as a coach, writer and teacher. It’s given me a chance to have leadership opportunities within the sport. It’s just been an honor to be associated with the ASCA all these years.”
