Weiland Makes Two More Appearances As USA National Team Trials Come To A Close; Final Roster TBA On July 2

A weeklong schedule of intrasquad scrimmages and games versus summer-league teams in the Northeast ended on Saturday night in Newport, R.I., competing the tryout phase for the 2006 USA Baseball National Team. Notre Dame freshman pitcher Kyle – who notched a save in one of the earlier scrimmages – saw action in each of this week’s final two games and now awaits announcement of the final 2006 USA Baseball National Team roster (the 35-player trials roster will be trimmed to 22).

Weiland’s stats in the final two games included similar numbers, with each of those outings featuring 1.2 innings, two runs allowed and one earned run allowed by the Freshman All-American. He also had a strikeout, two walks and two hits allowed in the 7-2 loss to the Torrington (Conn.) Twisters on Thursday, June 29, before adding two Ks, a walk and three hits allowed in the 8-3 win over the Newport (R.I.) Gulls on July 1.

After announcing the 22-player National Team roster on Sunday afternoon (July 2), Team USA will return to action with a game versus Taiwan, on the night of July 3 in Pawtucket, R.I. (6:35 EDT, at McCoy Stadium).

GAME #4 RECAP (USA 8, Newport Gulls 3; July 1) – A solo home run from Kentucky OF Collin Cowgill broke a 3-3 tie in the 7th and sparked a decisive three-run inning for Team USA, in front of 2,710 fans at Cardines Field … Cowgill’s blast cleared the 35-foot fence in left-center, with the next run coming home thanks to an error before Tennessee 2BTony Delmonico’s pinch-hit single yielded a 6-3 lead … a two-run single by N.C. State 2B Ramon Carona capped the scoring in the 9th … Eastern Kentucky LHP Christian Friedrich worked into a bases-loaded jam with no outs in the 7th but Rice LHP Cole St. Clair nearly maintained the USA’s 3-2 lead, striking out the next two batters on six pitches before Jim Miller coaxed a walk to force home the tying run … the USA had jumped out to an early lead after Tennessee CF Julio Borbon’s leadoff double to the right-center gap and UNC catcher Tim Federowicz’s 2-out single (1-0) … Cal State Fullerton RHP Wes Roemer logged two no-hit, shutout innings as the USA starter (3 Ks) … the USA added two more runs in the 5th to push the lead to 3-0 .. .Virginia 1B Sean Doolittle singled with one out and advanced to second on a balk by Paul Nardozzi (one of the top BIG EAST Conference pitchers during the 2006 season, at Pittsburgh) … Mississippi 3B Zack Cozart then hit a pinch-hit RBI single to left and scored on a double to right-center by Vanderbilt DH Pedro Alvarez … the USA took a no-hitter into the 5th before Weiland allowed John Mollicone’s 5th-innning single through the right side … the Gulls had scored an unearned run earlier in the inning, thanks to an RBI groundout from Chris Dominguez .. Army LHP Nick Hill (Army) pitched two hitless innings in relief (BB) while Weiland allowed one earned run and one unearned in his 1.2 IP (2 Ks, BB, 3 H) … Friedrich recorded an out and gave up a run (K, 2 BB) while St. Clair picked up the win (3.0 IP, H, BB, 7 Ks) … Doolittle, Cozart, Oregon State 3B Darwin Barney and Miami 2B Jemile Weeks each had two of the USA’s 14 hits.

GAME #3 RECAP (Torrington Twisters 7, USA 2; June 29) – The home team got off to a quick start at Fuessenich Park, as leadoff hitter Andres Perez homered to left off of Arkasnsas LHP Nick Schmidt … Matt Arburr added another solo shot for the Twisters in the 3rd, versus Florida RHP Bryan Augenstein … Delmonico’s solo shot in the 5th (vs. starter Joe Serafin) put the USA on the board but Perez answered with a 2-out RBI single versus Friedrich … the USA cut the lead to 3-2 in the 6th, after Cozart’s leadoff double, an infield single by Rutgers 3B Todd Frazier and Tennessee catcher J.P. Arencibia’s sacrifice fly … a pair of Twisters runs followed moments later, with BIG EAST player Derek Shunk (Villanova) hitting an RBI single before Weiland’s wild pitch brought home another run (both were unearned) … the hosts capped the scoring in the 8th, when Perez hit an RBI triple and Mitchell Moses added a run-scoring single (both vs. Clemson LHP Daniel Moskos) … Serafin picked up the win (7.0 IP, 2 R, 7 H, BB, 8 Ks) while Schmidt took the loss (2.0 IP, R) … Delmonico and Cozart had three hits each while Doolittle had a pair of singles.

SCRIMMAGE #3 RECAP (Blue 1, Red 1; June 29) – The 5-inning scrimmage in Torrington produced just a pair of runs … Alvarez led off the 2nd inning for the Blue with a single to right amd moved up on a pair of groundouts before scoring on Texas catcher Preston Clark’s single to right … the Red team tied the game in the 4th when Davis led off with a walk, advanced to third on a base hit by Cozart and scored on Doolittle’s single … Vanderbilt LHP David Price started for the Blue (2.0 IP, H, BB, 4 Ks) while California RHP Tyson Ross was the Red team’s starter (2.0 IP, R, 3 H, 2 BB, 2 Ks) … Roemer added a scoreless inning (BB, 2 Ks) while Prince closed out the game for the Blue (2.0 IP, R, 2 H, BB, 2 Ks) … Davis pitched an inning of scoreless relief for the Red and Sublett closed the game for them by striking out the side in the 5th.
