Volleyball Takes First Match of the Year from Fairfield in the Shamrock Invitational

The Notre Dame volleyball team began the 2000 season with a solid victory over Fairfield in three games (15-7, 15-7 and 15-10) at the Joyce Center Friday, Sept. 1. Senior outside hitter Christi Girton led Notre Dame with 14 kills while junior opposite Kristy Kreher added 11 kills.

The Irish were keyed by their steady hitting (.331 percentage for the match) and some stellar defensive play. Sophomore Janie Alderete notched a career-high 15 digs while junior Marcie Bomhack excelled in the back row as well with 10 digs and seven kills.

2000 BIG EAST preseason player of the year Denise Boylan also had a solid game for the Irish. Leading the offensive attack from the setter position, Boylan totaled 37 assists and helped the Notre Dame defensive effort with 10 digs.

Fairfield was led by Joanne Saunders with 18 kills and 12 digs and Corrine Carlson with 11 kills and 14 digs.

The Shamrock Invitational will continue on Saturday and Sunday. Notre Dame will face #15 BYU on Saturday, Sept. 2, at 7:00 p.m., in the Joyce Center. BYU swept their match with Clemson 3-0 (15-5, 15-7 and 15-10) in the first game of the afternoon. Fairfield will meet Clemson at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Clemson and Notre Dame will meet for the final match of the invitational on Sunday, Sept.3, at 2:00 p.m.
