Irish Record 11th Sweep in Win Over Miami

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The Notre Dame volleyball team improved to 15-9 overall and 9-5 in ACC play here today with a 3-0 win over the University of Miami. The Irish took the first set 25-16 before earning 25-22 victories in sets two and three to notch their 11th sweep of the season.

Freshman Sydney Bent led the Notre Dame attack with 14 kills  and a .391 hitting percentage while classmate Charley Niego added 12 kills with a .357 hitting percentage. Freshman setter Zoe Nunez recorded 35 assists through the three sets of play.

Senior Ryann DeJarld buoyed the Irish backline with 15 digs. The Notre Dame defense limited the Hurricanes to a .125 hitting percentage in the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set
In the match’s opening set, the Irish led from start to finish in a 25-16 victory to take a 1-0 lead. Notre Dame took control of the frame with an early 10-2 run to earn a 16-6 advantage. The cushion was enough to propel the Irish, who clinched the nine-point win with a kill by Niego and an ace by DeJarld. Notre Dame limited the Hurricanes to a .083 hitting percentage in the frame. Niego paced the Irish with five kills in the set.

Second Set
The Irish broke away from an 8-8 tie with a 4-1 spurt to earn a 12-9 lead and force a Miami timeout. The Hurricanes responded with a 6-3 streak to even the score at 15 points apiece. The teams worked their way to a 20-20 deadlock before the Irish closed the stanza on a 5-2 run to take a 2-0 lead. Bent led the Irish attack with five kills in the frame while Nunge added four.

Third Set
After splitting the first 12 points of the frame, the Irish went on a 5-1 run to take a 11-7 lead. Miami answered with a 6-2 streak of their own to level the score at 13-13. The two sides eventually worked to a 19-all tie after trading 4-1 runs. A kill by Niego followed by a pair of kills by Nunge was the difference down the stretch as the Irish earned a 25-22 victory to sweep Miami.

UP NEXT
The Irish host North Carolina State on Friday (Nov. 9) at 8 p.m. before traveling to Tallahassee to take on Florida State on Sunday (Nov. 11) at 1 p.m. Both matches will be streamed live via ACC Network Extra.
