Volleyball Claims Fifth Big East Win Over St. John's

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame volleyball team stayed perfect in BIG EAST play with a 15-6, 15-7, 15-6 victory over visiting St. John’s Friday night at the Joyce Center. With the win, the Irish improved to 11-6 and 5-0 in the BIG EAST, while the Red Storm fell to 13-10 overall and 2-3 in the BIG EAST.

The Irish got a game-high 16 kills on .577 hitting from sophomore Kristy Kreher (Birmingham, Mich.) to go along with nine digs. Three other Notre Dame players reached double-digits in kills, including Marcie Bomhack (13 kills), Christi Girton (11 kills) and Mary Leffers (10 kills). Leffers was perfect offensively with a .500 hitting percentage on 20 attempts, while junior Denise Boylan contributed 39 assists in the winning effort.

In game one, the Irish broke a 6-6 tie by scoring nine unanswered points to pick up a 15-6 win. In game two, Notre Dame broke a 7-7 tie and went on an eight-point unanswered scoring run, winning 15-7. Game three was a bit different as the Irish raced out to a 4-0 lead and never fell behind, winning the game and the match, 15-6.

The Red Storm was led by Amanda Berg, who had nine kills and four blocks, while Kristy Mercein recorded a team-best eight digs.

Notre Dame faces BIG EAST conference foe Connecticut, Sunday, Oct. 24 at 2 p.m. at the Joyce Center.
