NOTRE DAME, Ind. –

Junior guard Steve Vasturia (Medford, N.J.) will join seniors Zach Auguste and Austin Burgett and junior Demetrius Jackson as a captain for the remainder of the 2015-16 University of Notre Dame men’s basketball campaign.

Vasturia is averaging a career-best 12.2 points per game as Notre Dame’s fourth-leading scorer and is one of five Irish starters in double figures. He has scored in double figures in 11 of Notre Dame’s 13 contests this season. Vasturia netted a career-high 21 points in a come-from-behind victory at Illinois in early December. That contest marked the second 20-plus point effort of his career. He also dished off a career-high eight assists in Notre Dame’s win over Youngstown State on Dec. 21.

Vasturia has played in 78 career contests and has been in the starting lineup on 63 occasions. Among all active Irish players, he has started in a team-best 57 straight games. Vasturia averaged 10.1 per game as a sophomore in Notre Dame’s run to the 2015 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship and an appearance in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship. He also earned first-team ACC All-Tournament team honors after helping lead the Irish to the crown.

“Steve has been a leader for us on and off the court all season long,” head coach Mike Brey says. “He’s been a steady voice for us on the court and in the locker room throughout this season. He has the utmost respect of our coaching staff and his teammates. I’ve always loved his demeanor and the way he handles his business. Naming him a captain along with Zach, Austin and Demetrius is a reflection of how important Steve is to our program.
