Kohler, Wis. – Three members of the Notre Dame women’s golf team – sophomore Ashley Armstrong (Flossmoor, Ill.), 2012 graduate Becca Huffer (Denver, Colo.) and incoming freshman Lindsey Weaver (Scottsdale, Ariz.) – saw their first-ever U.S. Women’s Open Championship appearances come to an end on Friday afternoon as the trio failed to make the cut on the 6,799-yard, par 72 Blackwolf Run Course.
The cut was set at five-over par 149 or 10 strokes behind tournament leader Suzann Pettersen of Norway who leads the tournament with a five-under par total of 139 after rounds of 71 and 68.
Weaver, who will begin her Notre Dame career this fall, was the top finisher among Irish golfers as she tied for 131st in the field of 156 golfers with a 16-over par total of 160. After firing a seven-over par 79 in Thursday’s opening round, Weaver followed with a nine-over mark of 81 on Friday morning.
Huffer was second among the Notre Dame contingent as she tied for 133rd with a 17-over par 161. The Denver, Colo., native who turned pro in May after her collegiate career ended followed an opening-round 79 with a 10-over par 82 on Friday to close out her first appearance in the Open.
Armstrong, who was the 2012 BIG EAST rookie of the year, finished one stroke behind Huffer with an 18-over par 162 and finished among a group of golfers in a tie for 142nd. The sophomore-to-be at Notre Dame opened her first U.S. Open with an eight-over par 80 in the sweltering heat on Thursday and followed with a 10-over par 82 on Friday morning.
Weaver and Armstrong were among a field of 28 amateurs who started in the tournament. Only three of them survived the cut to play the final two rounds of the tournament.

The 19-year old Weaver teed off at 7:00 a.m. in her second round on the first tee and was three-over par on the front nine with a 39. She followed with a 42 on the back for her 81 that included seven bogeys, two double bogeys and a pair of birdies.
Huffer started just after 9:12 a.m. at the 10th hole and shot a 42 on the back nine and followed with a 40 for the front nine for an 82. Her round included five bogeys, two triples and a birdie.
Armstrong’s final 18 holes started at 9:01 on the opening hole. She shot a 40 on the front nine and closed out the day with a 42 on the back for her 82. Her round included five bogeys, a double and a triple bogey.
The trio joins Nicole Zhang (2010) and Crissy Klein (1995) to give the Irish women’s program five golfers to qualify for the U.S. Women’s Open Championship.
