Jan. 20, 2009

Notre Dame, Ind – Two Monogram winners will be making their Super Bowl debuts at Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa, Fla. on Sunday, Feb. 1st. Defensive end Bertrand Berry and offensive lineman Mike Gandy will lead the Arizona Cardinals to their first Super Bowl birth in franchise history.

Berry, a four-time Monogram winner from 1993-96, has been a force up front for the Cardinals. This year Berry recorded 22 tackles, including five sacks. Berry has started all three playoff games this January, racking up seven tackles and three sacks. This is Berry’s 11th season in the NFL and his fifth year with the Arizona Cardinals.

Gandy, a three-time Monogram winner from 1998-2000, has anchored the offensive line of one of the NFL’s most prolific offenses. This season the Cardinals ranked among the top four in NFL in passing yards per game, total yards per game and points scored per game. This is Gandy’s eighth season in the NFL and his second year with the Arizona Cardinals.

The duo of Berry and Gandy continue Notre Dame’s streak of being represented at the Super Bowl. This marks the 10th straight season at least one former Irish player has been on a Super Bowl roster. In seven of the previous nine Super Bowls at least one former Irish player has walked off the field a world champion.
