NOTRE DAME, Ind. — University of Notre Dame freshman Troy Murphy was named the BIG EAST Conference rookie of the week for his performance in the first week of the college basketball season.
Murphy, a 6-9, 225-pound forward from Morristown, N.J., scored 19 points and brought down six rebounds in Notre Dame’s 76-65 loss to Miami of Ohio on Friday night and backed it up with 16 points and six rebounds in the 64-62 Irish win over Yale on Sunday.
The award marks the first time in Notre Dame’s four-year membership in the league that a men’s basketball player won rookie of the week honors.
