NOTRE DAME, Ind. – University of Notre Dame sophomore forward Troy Murphy (Morristown, N.J.) was named consensus first team All-America today by the NCAA. The consensus All-America honor is based on the All-America teams named by the Associated Press, The Sporting News, the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the United States Basketball Writers Association.
Murphy becomes the first Notre Dame player to earn AP first team honors since Adrian Dantley in 1975 and ’76.
Murphy was joined on the five-man team by Cincinnati center Kenyon Martin, Iowa State forward Marcus Fizer, Indiana guard A.J. Guyton and Texas center Chris Mihm.
Murphy was named a first team pick by the Associated Press and the USBWA while he was named second team by the NABC and The Sporting News. Murphy was named the 1999-2000 BIG EAST Conference player-of-the-year and was a unanimous first-team all-BIG EAST pick.
Murphy leads the Irish in scoring at 22.9 points per game (tied for sixth) in the country) and 10.5 rebounds (tied for seventh in the country). He was the first player to lead the BIG EAST in scoring and rebounding during the conference season and currently leads the BIG EAST in overall games in that category.
He currently has 1,320 career points – the 18th-highest in school history.
The Irish currently have a record of 21-14 and will travel to New York’s Madison Square Garden for the National Invitation Tournament finals. The Irish take on Penn State on Tuesday at 9 p.m. EST in a semifinal game that will be televised nationally on ESPN.
