Track and Field to Host ND Invitational Saturday

Jan. 27, 2005

Notre Dame, Ind. – The Notre Dame men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams will continue their three weekend home-stand on Saturday when they welcome contingents from Butler, Loyola, DePaul, Marquette and Michigan State to the Loftus Sports Center on Saturday. Running events kick off at 2:00 p.m. with the women’s 500 meters. Field events begin at 12:30 p.m. with the men’s long jump. All visiting teams will be in attendance with both their men’s and women’s teams on Saturday with the exception of Michigan State, as only the Spartan men will be featured.

The highlight of the meet is expected to be the men’s 3,000 meters with the deep Irish distance crew pitted against a group of Butler runners who placed fourth at the NCAA cross country championships this past fall. Steve Sherer, a Michigan State All-American in the 3,000 is also a potential competitor in the race.

EARLY SEASON RECAP

The Notre Dame track and field teams are looking to build momentum as they move closer to their first big meet of the year, the Meyo Invitational on February 4th and 5th. Last week the Irish teams had a very successful outing in the Notre Dame Indoor Opener, claiming victories in 22 of 29 events, and posting 30 new BIG EAST Championship qualifications, to go along with the 19 they achieved at the Central Michigan Opener two weeks ago.

BIG EAST Champion hurdler, senior Selim Nurudeen led the way for the Irish in the Indoor Opener, winning the 60-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, and the 60-meter hurdles.

Junior All-American Stacey Cowan flirted with her own school high jump record in the meet, and ended up turning in a season best jump of 1.78m (5′ 10″) which was good enough to win the event and post a provisional qualification for the NCAA Championships.

TRAFFIC CHANGES STILL IN EFFECT

As construction progresses on the new Guglielmino Family Athletic Complex, parking and access to the Loftus Center will remain the same as it was last season.

All fans will need to park in Notre Dame’s C1 parking lot directly south of the Joyce Center. Be prepared for a long walk to access Loftus Center, which can be found just north of Cartier Field and Moose Krause Stadium. There is no parking available in front of Loftus or behind the Joyce Center for those attending the track and field meet.

As always, admission to Notre Dame track meets is free.

RESULTS

Results from the Notre Dame Indoor Opener will be available after the conclusion of the meet on the Notre Dame Athletics website: und.com.
