EAST LANSING, Mich. — Notre Dame’s track and field teams traveled to Michigan State for the Spartan Invitational on Saturday. The women’s team took first in three events while the men finished second in five events.

Freshman Carri Lenz placed first in the 400 meters in 58.18 and was second in the 200 meters in 25.88. Sophomore Sarah Lopienski won the 400-meter hurdles in 1:06.64 followed by senior teammate Carrie Gulick in second in 1:06.79. Junior Kelle Saxen won the high jump with a jump of 5-5 3/4. Sophomore Patti Rice took second in the 800 meters in 2:17.06 and sophomore Alison Klemmer was second in the 3,000 meters in 10:15.71. Freshman Erin Olson was second in the 1,500 meters in 4:45.27.

On the men’s side sophomore Chris Cochran placed second in the 400 meters in 47.99 and fourth in the 200 meters in 22.06. Senior Gabe Seaman took second in the 400-meter hurdles in 54.62. Senior Jim Pilla placed second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:30.92 with teammate Ryan Blaney in fifth in 9:45.55. Freshman Matt Thompson placed second in the discus with a throw of 152-8. Senior Chris Smith took second in the javelin with a throw of 158-8.
