Track and Field's Marshaun West, Tim Kober Earn All-America Honors At The NCAA Outdoor Championships

May 31, 2000

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame seniors Marshaun West (Sikeston, Mo.) and Tim Kober (Gillette, N.J.) finished their Irish careers Wednesday by earning All-America honors in day one action of the 2000 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Durham, N.C.

West finished seventh in the long jump (25-2 3/4) to garner All-America honors for the second time in his career after finishing sixth in the indoor long jump in 1999. A team co-captain, West is just the second Irish men’s long jumper to earn outdoor All-America honors, joining former Irish standout George Meagher, who placed fifth overall in 1934. Savante Stringfellow of the University of Mississippi finished first overall in 2000 with a leap of 26-9 3/4.

Notre Dame distance runner Alison Klemmer (Troy, Mich.) was unable to earn All-America honors for the third straight year in the 10,000 meters, placing 20th overall with a time of 36:13.41. The senior finished seventh in the same event in 1999 and eighth in 1998, becoming the first Irish women’s distance runner to achieve All-America status.

Seniors Kober and Phil Mishka (Toledo, Ohio) both finished fourth in their respective heats of the 800 meters. Kober recorded a career-best time of 1:48.12 to earn All-America honors with the 10th-fastest time of the day, while Mishka ran a time of 1:48.46. Neither Kober or Mishka qualified for the eight-man final slated for Friday.

Sophomore Luke Watson (Stillwater, Minn.) also was unable to advance to the finals, placing 18th overall in the semifinals of the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:01.72.

The four-day NCAA championship meet continues Thursday with day two action featuring Notre Dame’s Jennifer Engelhardt (Battle Creek, Mich.) in the high jump, Tameisha King (Mableton, Ga.) in the long jump, Ryan Shay (Central Lake, Mich.) in the 10,000 meters and Liz Grow (New Braunfels, Texas) in the semifinals of the 400 meters.
