Track And Field Runs Well In Palo Alto

The University of Notre Dame men’s and women’s track and field team wrapped up its weekend of competition late Saturday at the Stanford Invitational. The Irish teams actually split up in three directions this weekend, with many of its top distance runners at the Stanford Invite.

Sophomore Lauren King and freshman Molly Huddle ran together in the top section of the 1,500 meters, eventually finishing fifth and sixth, respectively. King, who finished in 4:20.32, and Huddle (4:20.50) easily qualified for both the BIG EAST outdoor championship and the NCAA regional meet.

In the top section of the men’s 1,500 meters, sophomore Eric Morrison ran well to finish fourth in 3:44.16 (which qualifies for both the BIG EAST and NCAA meet). Junior Kevin Somok took 17th in a BIG EAST qualifying 3:48.48.

Freshman Thomas Chamney ran in the top section of the 800 meters, taking 12th place in 1:52.01 and meeting the BIG EAST qualification in that event.

In the field events, sophomore Chris Staron competed well in the high jump. Staron finished sixth by clearing 2.07m (6-9 1/2) and qualified for the NCAA regional meet.

Junior Godwin Mbagwu competed in the triple jump and finished fourth (13.83m – 45-4 1/2) which qualifies for the BIG EAST meet as well.
