Track And Field Ready For Indoor Home Opener

Jan. 23, 2003

The University of Notre Dame men’s and women’s track and field teams will be in action at home this weekend on Friday, Jan. 24, at 7 p.m. against Ball State and the Western Michigan women’s team. The Irish are just beginning the 2003 indoor season, with only two meets in the record books.

Speaking of record books, the women’s indoor records have already taken a hit this season. Two seniors, Tameisha King and Jaime Volkmer, have broken their own school records while in action at Central Michigan last weekend. King jumped 6.31m (20-8 1/2) to establish the school indoor long jump record and reach an NCAA qualification mark. Volkmer did her work in the triple jump, leaping 12.25m (40-2 1/4). Both Irish athletes will be in action Friday afternoon.

The men’s team strength lies in its distance group, which will finally be in full action for the indoor season on Friday evening. All-American Luke Watson will be running in the mile, warming up for a possible sub-four minute mile effort at the upcoming Meyo Invitational (Feb. 7-8). Defending BIG EAST 110-meter hurdle champion Selim Nurudeen will also be in action.

The meet begins Friday evening at 5:30 p.m. with the men’s long jump. The running events begin a 7:00 p.m. with the women’s 500 meter run. Admission to all Notre Dame track and field meets is free and all home meets are run in the Loftus Sports Center on the east side of campus. Complete results will be available on www.und.com.
