Men's DMR Earns NCAA Accolades

NEW ORLEANS, La. — The University of Notre Dame track and field program’s men’s distance medley relay has been named the NCAA DI Track Athlete(s) of the Week following their outstanding run at the Alex Wilson Invitational as announced by the NCAA and USTFCCCA Tuesday (February 19). 

The relay team, made up of Dylan Jacobs, Edward Cheatham, Samuel Voelz and Yared Nuguse ran the nation’s fastest time of the season at Saturday’s meet crossing the line in 9:26.10. Their final time came just 0.12 seconds shy of the NCAA all-time best for second ever in recorded history. 

Jacobs led the group off, finishing the 1,200m leg in 2:55 when he handed the baton to Cheatham for the 400m stretch. He recorded a 47 second split before Voelz raced to a 1:48.50 split in the 800m leg. Nuguse served as the anchor for the team as he shttered his previous best mile time by nearly seven seconds, crossing the finish in 3:54.40.

Nuguse and Cheatham were both members of last year’s squad which finished second overall at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. 

The team continues their run this week at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships February 21-23 in Blacksburg, Virginia.
