Track And Field Concludes Indoor Regular Season

March 4, 2000

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame men’s and women’s track and field teams ended the regular season indoor schedule today with the completion of the Alex Wilson Invitational. As with the previous evening of competition on Friday, the second day of events enabled many athletes to qualify for the NCAA championship meet next weekend in Fayetteville, Ark. Friday night, 15 provisional qualifying marks or times were achieved. The athletes followed up today with 19 provisional qualifying times, including many from the roster of both the Notre Dame teams.

Freshman Tameisha King (Mableton, Geo.) started the day off right for the Irish by winning the women’s long jump competition. King broke her own Meyo field record with the 20-1 1/2 effort. The mark is also over the provisional qualifying standard and set a new Alex Wilson Invitational record.

All-American Jennifer Engelhardt (Battle Creek, Mich.) cleared 5-9 3/4 in the women’s high jump and earned her fourth first place finish this year.

The traditional “Alex Wilson 800” featured some of the top middle distance runners in the nation and it was reflected in the finishing times. Senior Phil Mishka (Toledo, Ohio) won the event in 1:48.44 and led four provisional qualifying runners, one of which was fellow senior Tim Kober (Gillette, N.J.). Kober and Mishka are already attending the NCAAs next weekend as a part of the men’s distance medley team that recorded the second fastest time in the nation Friday night.

Sophomore sprinting sensation Liz Grow (New Braunfels, Texas) won the women’s 400 meters, shaving over a half second off her previous season-best time. The 54.16 effort was another provisional qualifying mark for the Irish.

Senior captain Patty Rice (Mishawaka, Ind.) turned in a impressive performance in her last home indoor event for the Irish. Rice finished second in the women’s mile, running a career-best 4:49.09 that set a new school record and qualified provisionally for the NCAA championship meet.

Two other Irish athletes won their individual events. All-BIG EAST performers and seniors Marshaun West (Sikeston, Mo.) and Chris Cochran (Crystal Lake, Ill.) won the men’s long jump and 200 meters, respectively.
