Track And Field Competes In First Outdoor Meet Of The Season

he University of Notre Dame men’s and women’s track and field teams began their 2004 outdoor season at the Baldy Castillo meet in Tempe, Ariz., over the weekend. It was the first weekend out for all the competitors, as both teams begin their push toward the BIG EAST Championship.

Notre Dame’s highlight was provided by sophomore Derek Goguen, who posted a personal best to win the javelin competition. Goguen’s toss ended at 60.59m (198-9) to easily qualify for the BIG EAST Championship meet and is close to the NCAA regional meet qualifying mark as well (61.62m).

Sophomore Meghan Horn qualified for the BIG EAST meet with a fourth-place finish in the shot put (12.53m – 41-1 1/2), while freshman Cassie Gullickson also qualified for the league outdoor meet in the triple jump by finishing fifth (11.74m, 37-7 3/4).

Notre Dame will compete in the Stanford Invitational on March 26 and 27, while also taking part in the Western Michigan Opener on the 27th.
