Track And Field Competes At Billy Hayes Meet

The University of Notre Dame men’s and women’s track and field teams sent a small roster of competitors to the 2001 Billy Hayes Invitational in Bloomington, Ind., on Saturday.

Megan Johnson (Seattle, Wa.) and Jennifer Handley (Barrie, Ontario) represented the women’s distance group, competing in the 800 meters. Johnson finished fourth in 2:11.96 while Handley came in eighth in 2:13.72.

Pat Conway (Springfield, Va.) and Kevin Somok (Southburg, Conn.) also ran the 800 meters on the men’s side, Conway finishing 11th in 1:52.51 and Somok taking 20th place in 1:54.47.

Both teams were represented by a thrower at the meet. Dore DeBartolo (Aurora, Ill.) placed fourth with a solid 179-8 hammer toss while Derek Dyer (Huntington, Ind.) took seventh place in the discus (164-4).

Notre Dame’s pole vault school-record holder Jaime Volkmer (Kearney, Neb.) continues to clear impressive heights, finishing sixth with a 12-5 1/2 effort. Representing the men’s team, Josh Heck (Mishawaka, Ind.) posted a personal-best by clearing 16-2 and finishing in fifth place in the pole vault.

The Irish have one more regular-season meet at the Georgia Tech Invitational on May 19th before the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., May 30-June 2.
