Feb. 26, 2007

Notre Dame, Ind. – Notre Dame freshman Tory Jackson (Saginaw, Mich.) has been named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week for the first time this season. The Irish point guard earns the award after averaging 17.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 6.5 assists in helping his team to victories over DePaul (78-54) and Marquette (85-73) last week.

Jackson was not the only Irish player to earn BIG EAST honors as classmate Luke Harangody (Schererville, Ind.) was named to the league’s Honor Roll after averaging 17.5 points and 10.0 rebounds in the two wins.

In the win over the Blue Demons, Jackson nearly recorded a triple double as he finished with 13 points, a career-high nine rebounds and dished off six assists. He was 6-9 from the field, and at one point in the second half, scored six straight points to help break open the game.

Against 16th-ranked Marquette, he was instrumental in his team’s fourth win over ranked opponent this season. Jackson scored a career-high 21 points against the Golden Eagles (a personal best and first 20-plus point outing of his career), grabbed seven rebounds and dished off seven minutes while playing all 40 minutes of the contest.

For the two games, Jackson shot 57.1 percent.

The Irish rookie has played in all 28 contests and has been in the starting lineup each of the last 16 contests. He is averaging 7.4 points, 4.0 assists and 2.9 rebounds. Jackson has scored in double figures in nine games and in each of the last five contests.

A three-time BIG EAST rookie-of-the-week honoree, Harangody also produced some career-best performances in the two wins. Against the Blue Demons, he scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds and followed that up with a career-high 22 points (his second 20-plus point outing of the season) and matched his personal best with 13 rebounds against Marquette.

Harangody also has played in all 28 contests and been in the starting lineup in each of the last 12 games. He is averaging 14.9 points (fourth best on the team) and is the team’s second-leading rebounder at 6.3 boards per game. Harangody has scored in double figures on 13 games and finished with seven-plus rebounds on 13 occasions.

Notre Dame is the only school to have two different freshman honored with rookie-of-the-week accolades.

Currently, Notre Dame stands alone in fourth-place in the BIG EAST regular-season standings with a 10-5 conference mark. Riding a four-game win streak, the Irish are 22-6 overall and are ranked 22nd in the Associated Press and 17th in the ESPN/USA Today polls.

Jeff Green of Georgetown was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week. Other Honor Roll honorees included Terrence Williams (Louisville), Herbert Hill (Providence), Andy Rautins (Syracuse) and Scottie Reynolds (Villanova).
