Tom Knight And Garrick Sherman Named Men's Basketball Captains

Dec. 27, 2013

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Tom Knight (Dixfield, Maine) and Garrick Sherman (Kenton, Ohio) will serve as captains for the remainder of the 2013-14 Notre Dame men’s basketball campaign alongside teammates Eric Atkins (Columbia, Md.) and Pat Connaughton (Arlington, Mass.). The announcement was made today by Irish head coach Mike Brey.

“Tom and Garrick have established themselves as key voices and leaders in our locker room this season,” Brey says. “They have the respect of their teammates and our coaching staff. I’ve been impressed with their maturity and leadership over the course of the last several months.

“Tom and Garrick are veteran guys who have handled their business both on and off the court and understand our system and what is expected of them on a daily basis. I’m excited that these four guys — Eric, Pat, Tom and Garrick — will be leading us as we begin play in the Atlantic Coast Conference.”

The last time Notre Dame added a captain at midseason was two years ago (during the 2011-12 campaign) when Atkins, then a sophomore, served as a tri-captain with Tim Abromaitis and Scott Martin.

Sherman has emerged as dominant frontcourt player for the Irish this season. He is Notre Dame’s second-leading scorer and leading rebounder averaging 14.3 points and 7.4 rebounds. Sherman has started all 12 games for the Irish and is averaging 25.9 minutes per game. He leads the team in field goal percentage at 53.7 percent (66-123) and blocked shots (15).

The 6-11, 255-pound senior heads into Sunday’s (Dec. 29) matchup with Canisius riding a personal-best nine-game double-figure scoring streak and has two double-doubles to his credit. He has scored in double figures in all but two games for the Irish this season. Sherman netted a career-high 29 points and grabbed nine rebounds in Notre Dame’s loss at Iowa on Dec. 3. His two double-doubles were in back-to-back games against Bryant (14 pts., 13 rebs.) and North Dakota State (10 pts., 10 rebs.).

Knight has played in 11 contests this season and made starts in the first four games — (Miami of Ohio, Stetson, Indiana State and Santa Clara) this season. He is averaging 4.7 points and 3.3 rebounds this season. Knight had a season-high 13 points in Notre Dame’s win in the season opener against Miami of Ohio.

Currently taking graduate courses, Knight received his degree from the Mendoza College of Business in May 2013 in management consulting and psychology. He was named Notre Dame’s most improved player following the 2012-13 season after starting the final 16 games of the campaign and averaging 5.5 points and 3.5 rebounds in the 28 games he played.

Knight is a member of Notre Dame’s Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) and is the SAAC officer to the ACC. He has been very active this year in coordinating many community service activities for the entire Irish basketball team. Knight is a nominee for the National Basketball Coaches Association (NABC) Allstate Good Works Team.
