NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Senior attack Tom Glatzel (Ellicott City, Md.) highlighted a record five Notre Dame players named to the 2001 United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) All-America teams. Glatzel, the leading scorer for the Irish for the second straight year and one of five finalists for this year’s Tewaaraton Trophy, became the first player in the history of the men’s lacrosse program to earn first-team All-America honors.
Joining Glatzel on the All-American list were goalie Kirk Howell (Nashville, Tenn.), a second team honoree, midfielder Steve Bishko (West Islip, N.Y.), a third team selection, attack David Ulrich (Baltimore, Md.) and defenseman Mike Adams (Wilton, Conn.), who were both named as honorable mention picks at their respective positions.
Glatzel, an honorable mention selection in 2000, stood atop the Irish scoring charts for the second straight year with 40 goals and 27 assists for 67 points. He finished his career with 106 goals and 61 assists (167 points), good for fourth on the school’s all-time career scoring list and is one of just four players to register 100-plus career goals. Glatzel’s twin brother John, a defenseman at Syracuse University also was a first-team All-American selection on defense.
Howell becomes the first goalie in Notre Dame history to earn All-America honors as a second-team selection. He anchored an Irish defense that registered a 6.94 goals against average, the lowest in the 21-year history of the program. Howell posted a .632 save percentage this season and a 7.06 goals against average.
Bishko was one of two starting midfielders who started all 16 games for the Irish this season. He had a personal-best 19 goals this season and dished off five assists. He also was Notre Dame’s ground ball leader as he finished with 69 for the season. Bishko played in 56 games during his four-year career and finished with 52 goals and 22 assists (74 points).
Ulrich earns honorable mention honors for the second straight year and led the Irish in assists for the fourth straight season. The second-leading scorer in 2001 with 20 goals and a team-leading 29 assists for 49 points, he became the school’s career assist leader and finished his Notre Dame with 110 assists and 70 goals. His 180 career points places him third on the school’s all-time career scoring list. Ulrich also was named the Great Western Lacrosse League Player of the Year after earning first-team all-conference honors three straight years.
Adams was a three-year starter on defense for the Irish and a two-time first-team GWLL honoree. He was part of Notre Dame’s stellar defense which ranked third nationally in scoring defense. He played in 50 career games and has three goals, one assist and 88 ground balls.
The selection of these five players marks the ninth straight year an Irish has earned USILA All-America honors. Since 1993, Notre Dame has had 11 different players earn All-America honors.
Notre Dame completed the ’01 campaign with a 14-2 record as the Irish set the single-season school mark for wins while advancing to the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship national semifinals for the first time in school history.
