Jan. 19, 2010

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame men’s swimming head coach Tim Welsh will be interviewed Tuesday (Jan. 19) on the live CatholicTV talk show “This is the Day”.

The episode of “This is the Day” will stream live on CatholicTV.com at 10:30 a.m. (ET). The same episode will also air live on CatholicTV channels and associated Catholic stations throughout the United States and Canada.

The show will be available on the CatholicTV.com archives starting the same night of the broadcast day.

Welsh will discuss his recently released book “Coach Them Well: Fostering Faith and Developing Character in Athletes.” Other contributors to the book include Dale Brown, David Cutcliffe and Kelly Herrmann. “Coach Them Well” contains the reflections of these college coaches on the ministry of coaching. Each reflection contains the faith story of each coach as well as the insight gained through more than one hundred years of combined coaching experience.

A 1966 graduate of Providence College, Welsh has served as a head coach in the collegiate ranks for the past 32 seasons. He is currently in his 25th campaign with the Irish.

Over the span of his head coaching career, Welsh has helped lead his teams to two national championships, coming in 1978 and 1979 with Division III Johns Hopkins.

Welsh has also received personal accolades during his years as head coach, including being named Division III National Coach of the Year (1979) as well as BIG EAST Coach of the Year on four occasions (1999, 2004, 2005, 2008).

Along with being presented with the Distinguished Service Award, the College Swimming Coaches Association (CSCAA) also named Welsh as the Division I men’s representative on the Board of Directors. This will mark the second consecutive year in which Welsh has served in that capacity for the CSCAA.

In September 2009 he was named president of the American Swimming Coaches Association.
