Dec. 10, 1999

Three players from Notre Dame?s NCAA Women?s College Cup finalist women?s soccer team have been voted to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-America list in a vote of the nation’s coaches held prior to the 1999 NCAA women?s soccer tournament. Junior Anne Makinen (Helsinki, Finland) has been named to the second team, while seniors Jen Grubb (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) and Jenny Streiffer (Baton Rouge, La.) were third-team selections. The three All-America selections bring Notre Dame?s total to 23 since 1994 — more than any other school — and to 26 overall.

The All-America honor marks the fourth for Grubb during her Notre Dame, as she becomes the first four-time All-American defender for the Irish and joins midfielder Holly Manthei (1994-97) as Notre Dame?s only four-time All-Americans. Grubb closed out her career as Notre Dame?s most decorated defender in its 12-year history with 15 goals and 53 assists, the fifth-most assists in Irish history. She twice was voted the BIG EAST Conference defensive player of the year and is the BIG EAST?s only four-time, first-team women?s soccer selection.

Streiffer has earned All-America honors for the second time in her career and the first since she was a third-team pick as a freshman in 1996. The 1999 BIG EAST championship most outstanding player leaves Notre Dame as its all-time leading scorer with 70 goals and 71 assists for 211 points. Also a two-time GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American, Streiffer joined Mia Hamm as the only NCAA Division I women?s soccer players to score 70 goals and assist on 70 goals in a career.

Makinen has been voted an All-American in each of her first three years at Notre Dame. The midfielder was a third-team selection as a freshman in 1997 and made the second team as a sophomore. The Finnish national team member finished fourth on the team in scoring with 13 goals and 12 assists for 38 points. She also was one of two unanimous all-BIG EAST first-team selection this season.

Grubb, Streiffer and Makinen helped the Irish win 20 games for the sixth consecutive season with a 21-4-1 record. Notre Dame reached the championship game of the NCAA Women?s College Cup with a 1-0 win over top-ranked Santa Clara in the semifinals before losing to second-ranked North Carolina 2-0 in the final.
