Three Track and Field Members Earn All-America Honors At The NCAA Championships

June 1, 2000

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame junior Ryan Shay (Central Lake, Mich.), senior Jennifer Engelhardt (Battle Creek, Mich.) and freshman Tameisha King (Mableton, Ga.) earned All-America honors Thursday at the 2000 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Durham, N.C. Shay (10,000 meters) and Engelhardt (high jump) both recorded seventh-place finishes, while King was ninth overall in the long jump.

Shay, who qualified for the 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials in the same event, finished the race in 30:54.65, a little over 16 seconds behind NCAA champion Brad Hauser (Stanford), who won with a time of 30:38.57. Shay is the third Irish runner to earn All-America honors in the 10,000 meters, joining two-time honoree Jason Rexing (1996, 1998) and Mike McWilliams (1995). Shay completed a remarkable junior campaign, which also saw him earn All-America honors in cross country last November.

Engelhardt, a two-time indoor All-American in the high jump, capped her Notre Dame career by finishing in a three-way tie for seventh place with a leap of 5-11 1/4. The Irish team co-captain tied both Long Beach State’s Tayyiba Haneef and Ifoma Jones of Houston, while Texas’ Erin Aldrich won the event by clearing 6-2 3/4. Engelhardt finished 19th in the same event at last year’s NCAA meet.

King earned All-America honors in the long jump after placing ninth overall with a jump of 20-5 1/4 in her first NCAA championships. King was the school’s lone freshman to qualify after jumping a school-record 21-1 1/2 en route to a runner-up finish at the BIG EAST outdoor championships. Jenny Adams of the University of Houston claimed the NCAA long jump title with a mark of 21-5 1/2.

Also competing for the Irish was sophomore sprinter Liz Grow (New Braunfels, Texas), who finished eighth in the second heat of the women’s 400 meters. Grow did not advance to Saturday’s finals after posting a time of 53.91.

With the conclusion of day two of the NCAA meet Thursday, the Irish also finished up their collegiate competition schedule. Three meets, however, have been scheduled in preparation for this summer’s Olympic Trials, including the Cardinal Invitational (June 17) and the Pre Olympic Trials (July 2), which will both be held at Stanford University. Two Notre Dame track and field members, Shay and Engelhardt, have both recorded qualifying marks/times for the U.S. Olympic Trials set for July 14-23 in Sacramento, Calif.
