JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Three more University of Notre Dame track & field student-athletes punched their tickets to the NCAA Outdoor Championships with qualifying performances Friday at the East Preliminary Championships at Hodges Stadium on the campus of the University of North Florida, while another moved into Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Junior Margaret Bamgbose, who has already twice broken the Notre Dame outdoor record in the 400 meters over the last two seasons, again set the mark in the event, winning her quarterfinal heat and placing third overall in 51.37 to advance to the national championships in Eugene, Oregon, held June 10-13. She bested her mark of 51.42, set at the ACC Outdoor Championships earlier this month, and will aim for yet another All-America citation to add to the six already in her name.

Senior Amber Lalla finished 19th overall in the 400 in a time of 53.25, nearly matching the personal best of 53.24 she set in Thursday’s first round, but will not move on. Both Bamgbose and Lalla will race again in the 4×400-meter relay on Saturday, along with Parker English and Jordan Shead.

Senior Jade Barber advanced to the quarterfinals of the 100-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 13.05 to take first in her heat and fourth overall. Barber, who owns the Irish record in the event, will compete again Saturday to determine the national semifinal field.

Senior Chris Giesting became the first Irish male of the competition to earn a spot in Eugene, finishing second in his 400 meters heat (45.66) and third overall. Giesting will compete again in the 4×400-meter relay — along with Harvey Smith, Alex Groesch and Eric Ways — on Saturday.

Sophomore Nathan Richartz soon joined Giesting as a national qualifier in the pole vault, notching a personal best jump of 5.25 meters to snare 11th place to move on. His previous best jump was 5.10 meters, but his new mark moves him into fourth place all-time in the Irish record books.

Senior Dominick Padovano finished 21st in the discus with a toss of 54.40 meters, while freshman Greg Bombara placed 42nd in the javelin (57.11 meters).

Action concludes Saturday, with field events kicking off at 1:30 p.m. EDT and running events beginning at 6 p.m. EDT. The Irish women will have competitors in both the 4×100-meter relay and 4×400-meter relay, the 1,500 meters, the 100-meter hurdles and triple jump, while the Irish men will have representatives in the 4×400 relay and the 5,000 meters.
