Oct. 8, 2013

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Three University of Notre Dame softball players were tabbed as National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division I All-America Scholar Athletes for the 2012-13 academic year, the NFCA announced on Monday.

Then senior and current Irish volunteer assistant coach Brittany O’Donnell and current seniors Chloe Saganowich and Monica Torres each copped All-America scholar-athlete status, becoming the program’s first All-America scholar-athlete honorees since 2010.

The award is given to players nominated by an NFCA member coach who achieved a 3.50 grade point average or higher during the academic year. More than 4,000 players from seven different NCAA and high school divisions received 2012-13 NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete distinction.

O’Donnell graduated from Notre Dame in May as a four-time BIG EAST Conference Academic All-Star and was the softball recipient of the 2013 Notre Dame Club of St. Joseph Valley Rockne Student-Athlete Award, given to the graduating senior with the highest grade point average. Torres was a three-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star during her first three seasons as a member of the Irish, while Saganowich earned the honor in both her sophomore and junior campaigns.

Notre Dame is entering its first season of competition in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in 2014.
