Junior All-America twins Catrina Thompson (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman H.S.) and Christian Thompson (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman H.S.) – fresh off winning the first collegiate grand slam title in Notre Dame history at last weekend’s Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif. – are two of the 14 student-athletes featured on the “A List” of elite collegiate performers across all sports in the October 13 issue of Sports Illustrated On Campus, which is being disseminated across the campuses of America’s universities this week.
In the words of SI On Campus: “Think of the A List this way: the coolest, the hottest, the most of-the-moment, the cream of the crop. Here are 14 faces SIOC would usher to the front of just about any line, no questions asked.” The Thompsons are tabbed as the “A List … Duo” and are featured in a large photograph taken by 1994 Notre Dame graduate Matt Cashore. There is also a short paragraph about the sisters written by John Walters, an ’88 ND grad. Notre Dame is the only school to have multiple student-athletes on the “A List.”
The Thompsons are the only tennis players featured among the group, which also includes the likes of football Heisman Trophy candidates Matt Leinart of USC and Vince Young of Texas, as well as Connecticut basketball standout Rudy Gay.
Catrina and Christian and the rest of the Irish women’s tennis team will return to action on Friday, playing host to rival USC in an exhibition match in the Eck Tennis Pavilion, beginning at 4 p.m. (EST/CDT) on the eve of the tussle between the schools in football
