Notre Dame, Ind. – The third annual “Notre Dame Basketball Coaches vs. Cancer Golf Classic” will be held Sunday-Monday, August 15-16 at the Blackthorn Golf Club in South Bend, Ind. Hosted by Irish men’s basketball coach Mike Brey, the two-day event raises money and awareness for the American Cancer Society. The Notre Dame Federal Credit Union is the presenting sponsor of the event this year.
Festivities begin on Sunday evening (August 15) with a cocktail reception and silent auction sponsored by Lexus of Mishawaka from 6:00-9:00 p.m. at the Northern Indiana Center for History (808 West Washington, South Bend).
A scramble golf tournament will take place on Monday, August 18, followed by a celebrity dinner featuring Brey and his staff. The winning team receives a trip to the 2005 BIG EAST Men?s Basketball Championship at Madison Square Garden in New York City, which includes airfare, tickets to the game and lodging. The second-place team will receive four $100 gift certificates to the Blackthorn Golf Shop and four rounds of golf with a cart at the course. The third-place prize includes four $75 gift certificates to the Blackthorn Golf Shop and Notre Dame men?s and women?s basketball tickets.
Monday?s events commence at 10:00 a.m. with registration and a buffet lunch until 11:45 a.m. A clinic will take place at 11:00 a.m. for those interested, followed by the shotgun start of the tournament at noon. The awards dinner will take place beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the Blue Heron (located on the 15th hole at Blackthorn).
All participants in the tournament will receive six free rounds of golf at Blackthorn Golf Club, compliments of Notre Dame Federal Credit Union.
The 2004 Notre Dame Basketball Coaches vs. Cancer Classic is once again a collaboration between Blackthorn Golf Club and several leading businesses in the South Bend area. Ranked in Golf Digest’s “Places to Play, 2002” (4.5 stars), Blackthorn is one of the premier golfing facilities in Northern Indiana.
Space is still available for this year?s event. The cost per team is $2,200 or $550 for an individual. The donation includes two tickets to Sunday?s reception and silent auction, green fee for Monday?s tournament, a lunch buffet, a gift package and admission to the dinner. In addition, the cost of sponsoring a hole is $1,000 and includes two tickets to the reception and silent auction on Sunday.

Participating golfers also will have a chance to win $1,000,000 in the Million Dollar Shot contest held during the golf tournament.
Last year?s event, raised more than $150,000 for Coaches vs. Cancer, placing Notre Dame third in the country among NCAA basketball programs. Through the efforts of Brey and his wife, Tish, the past two events have raised nearly $250,000. The couple has been longtime supporters of the CVC program. Brey was the recipient of the ?03 CVC Champion Award, given annually by the CVC National Council and National Association of Basketball Coaches. He also is a member of that board.
