Notre Dame, Ind. – Junior Terri Taibl (Elm Grove, Wisc.) led the women’s portion of the tournament after shooting an opening round of 78. She is two strokes ahead of senior Kristin McMurtrie (Calgary, Alb.) who checked in with an 80 for her first round.

Seniors Steve Ratay (Arlington Heights, Ill.) and Chris Whitten (Rockford, Mich.) each fired opening rounds of 73 to take a two stroke lead over freshman K.C. Wiseman (South Bend, Ind.) and Kevin Ricci (Sr., Winter Park, Fla.) after the first round of Notre Dame’s annual campus championship at the Warren Golf Course.

The second round of both the men’s and women’s Campus Championship will be held at the Warren Golf Course on Sunday, Sept. 3 beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Taibl opened with a solid front nine as she opened with a 40 and improved that with a strong 38 over the back nine for her round of 78 on the 5,302-yard Warren Course. McMurtrie went out in 42 and also fired a 38 on the back to close her round with an 80.

Chasing Taibl and McMurtrie on Sunday will be returnees Rebecca Rogers (So., Alpharetta, Ga.) who is three strokes off the lead as she shot an opening round of 43-38-81. Shannon Byrne (So., Arlington Heights, Ill.) and junior Michelle Halverson (Plymouth, Mich.) round out the top five and are seven strokes behind Taibl. Byrne fired a 41-44 for her 85 while Halverson shot 45-40 on the way to 85.

For the men, Ratay got off to a strong start shooting an even par 35 on the front nine before firing a 38 on the back nine. Whitten, playing in the same threesome as Ratay, went out in 38 and finished strong with a 35 on the 6,744-yard Warren Course.

Two strokes behind Ratay and Whitten were Wiseman and Ricci. Wiseman fired a 39-36 for his 75 while Ricci was one of three golfers on the day to open with a 35 and had a 40 on the back nine as he covered the 6,744-yard course with a 75.

Rounding out the top 10 finishers on the opening day were Gavin Ferlic (So., South Bend, Ind.) and Patrick Mokris (Jr., Orlando, Fla.) who were tied for fifth with 76’s, three strokes behind the leaders. Tied for eighth were junior Jarrett Bingemann (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) and Donald Wolf (So., Miami, Fla.) with 78. Four players fired 79’s to tie for 10th led by sophomore Andy Kent (Lambare, Paraguay) and three freshmen Steve Colnitis (Baldwin, Md.), Ryan Marshall (Marco Island, Fla.) and Brent Haydon (Hampton, Ill.).
