Kelcy Tefft advance thanks to a straight set victory Wednesday evening

Tefft Gains Opening Round Victory at NCAA Championships

May 21, 2008

Notre Dame, Ind. – Junior Kelcy Tefft punched her ticket late Wednesday evening for the Round of 32 in the NCAA singles draw. Tefft was able to fight through a long, grueling match against UCLA’s Yasmin Schnack that rounded out the days action in Tulsa, Okla.

The Irish junior fought through a tough first set to win in a tiebreak by the score of 7-6 (7-5). The second set would not be easy either as they battled back and forth. However, Tefft was able to gain one break and would carry that on to capture the second set and the match over Schnack, by a score of 7-5.

With the victory, Tefft will move on to face the Auburn Tiger’s Fani Chifchieva in the second round on Thursday. First serve for the match is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.

Along with competing in the singles tournament, Tefft will also be opening her NCAA doubles tournament with partner Brook Buck. The tandem is the No. 3 seeded team in the event. Buck and Tefft are scheduled to begin their match at 5:00 p.m. against the pairing of Bianca Dulgheru and Sylvia Kosakowski of Pepperdine.
