Feb. 20, 2012

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Maggie Tamasitis, a senior attacker on the Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team, has been named both the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week as well as Womenslax.com Player of the Week, it was announced Monday. Additionally, the Irish (1-0) moved into the top 20 in the latest installment of the deBeer/InsideLacrosse poll.

Tamasitis, a member of the Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List, opened her final campaign in record setting fashion in the 17-14 victory over Stanford on Feb. 19. The Boyertown, Pa., native set a new program record for assists in a single half after dishing off five helpers in a 12-goal first half against the Cardinal, while matching a program-best with six assists in a game as she netted an additional helper in the second half of play.

Tamasitis also scored one goal in the contest and scooped up two ground balls. The senior also finds herself second on the all-time scoring streak list, having now tallied a point in 38 consecutive contests dating back to Feb. 23, 2010, while also moving closer to the all-time assist mark for a career (106) as she currently sits with 98.

In addition to the individual recognition for Tamasitis, the Irish also earned team distinction Monday after entering at 15th in the deBeer/InsideLacrosse rankings after checking in unranked in the preseason poll. Notre Dame represents one of four BIG EAST schools in the polls, joining Syracuse (12th), Loyola (Md.) (13th) and Georgetown (17th).

The Irish return to the field Saturday in search of the first 2-0 start at home since 2008 when they play host to Duquesne at noon (ET). The contest is tentatively scheduled for Arlotta Stadium, weather permitting, and can be viewed online at UND.com.
