University of Notre Dame men’s swimming head coach Matt Tallman will take an indefinite leave of absence, effective immediately.

University vice president and athletics director Jack Swarbrick made the announcement today.

Mike Litzinger, head coach of the Irish women’s swimming program, will assume coaching responsibilities for both the men’s and women’s teams.

Joseph Spahn, previously the team’s operations specialist, will serve as an assistant coach.

Tallman is in his second season as Irish men’s head coach after taking over that position following the retirement of longtime Irish men’s and women’s coach Tim Welsh.

Tallman first joined the Notre Dame staff as a men’s swimming assistant coach in 2001. Litzinger is in his initial season at Notre Dame.

Both the Irish men’s and women’s squads next compete in meets Jan. 8-9, 2016, in Charlottesville, Virginia, against the University of Virginia.
