Jan. 4, 2011

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame freshmen forwards T.J. Tynan (Orland Park, Ill.) and Anders Lee (Edina, Minn.) have been named the CCHA player of the month and rookie of the month respectively for their play with the Irish during the month of December. This marks the second time this season that each player has been honored by the CCHA with a monthly honor. Tynan was the conference rookie of the month in November while Lee was selected rookie of the month in October. Tynan is the first CCHA rookie to be named player of the month since March of 2006 when Michigan State’s Jeff Lerg took the honor in his first season.

Tynan is the RBC Financial Group player of the month for December as he led all CCHA scorers with five goals and four assists for nine points in five games and was +3 in those contests. He scored goals in four of the five games and turned in multiple-point games in two of them. His totals were tops among all CCHA rookies and all freshmen players in the nation. He also was the Hockey Commissioner’s Association national rookie of the month for November.

The following night, Miami was able to keep Tynan off the scoresheet, the only game of the month he was held scoreless. The following weekend, Notre Dame hosted Northern Michigan, where he tallied a goal in a 3-2 loss, and a 1-1-2 scoring line and +1 rating in a 5-2 victory. Tynan and the Irish finished off the month with a 10-2 victory over Canisius. In that matchup, Tynan recorded a career-high four points, finishing with two goals, including his third power-play tally of the season, two assists and +3 rating.

Lee started the month off with a +3 rating and a career-best three assists against Miami, as the Irish defeated the RedHawks, 5-4. In a 5-2 loss to Miami the following night, Lee was kept off the scoresheet, but tallied one helper against Norhtern Michigan on Dec. 11, a 3-2 loss. Notre Dame would split that series, defeating the Wildcats, 5-2, as Lee scored the game-winning goal and also had an assist. The final contest of the month was a 10-2 win over Canisius, where the 6-foot-3, 218-pound left wing notched his third two-point game, potting a 1-1-2 chart.

For the year, Tynan leads the Irish in scoring with 14 goals and 15 assists for 29 points in the first 22 games of the season. He has three power-play goals, two short-handed goals and two game winners while leading the team with a +13 mark. He leads the CCHA and the nation in rookie scoring and is third in both the conference and nationally overall with his 29 points. His 14 goals are tops in the CCHA and tie him for fifth in the country.

Lee is third among Notre Dame scorers with 12 goals and 10 assists for 22 points and is +8 for the season. He has three power-play goals and two game winners while leading the team with 91 shots this year. He is second among all CCHA freshmen in scoring and fourth nationally.
