The University of Notre Dame women’s swimming and diving season has not yet begun for the team as a whole, but one of its talented freshman swimmers has already reached an NCAA qualification time. Christel Bouvron, competing for Singapore at the 2002 Asian Games in Busan, South Korea, advanced to the finals of the 200-meter butterfly with a 2:17.53 effort in the preliminaries.

Bouvron’s 2:17.53 time is under the NCAA Championship B cut, which does not assure her a spot in the NCAA meet, but indicates the rookie will be in the running for a spot in the field. The NCAA Championship has automatic qualifying times, but if there are not enough automatic qualifiers, then B cut achievements are considered.

Bouvron moved on to finish eighth in the finals of the 200-meter butterfly, swimming 2:22.52 in the final race.

A native of Singapore, Bouvron also competed for her home country in the 2000 Olympic Games.
