LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Notre Dame improved its point total to 191 after the completion of the first day of men’s swimming and diving action at the 2011 BIG EAST Conference Championships. The Irish top the standings as Pittsburgh (157) and Louisville (133) are close behind at Wright Natatorium.

Striking a pose near the top of the podium was the 200 medley relay quartet, who finished fourth while setting a school record in 1:28.86. The time was also an NCAA B-cut, one of two on the day for Notre Dame.

“These were two strong performances for us, especially in setting a school record in the 200 medley relay,” Irish head coach Tim Welsh said. “Maybe we came out a bit too aggressive at the beginning of each relay, and perhaps we were a bit too keyed up. This is what we went to school for all season, and we’re going to come back even stronger tomorrow.”

Thursday’s preliminary races at begin at 10:00 a.m. (ET), with the finals kicking off at 6:00 p.m.
