Complete Men’s and Women’s Results by Event

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame men’s and women’s swimming team both lost their home openers today to Stanford University. Both teams came in as the defending national champions.

On the men’s side, the Cardinal defeated the Irish 149-102. Stanford set pool records in the 400 Medley Relay ( 3:21.62), the 1000 Freestyle (Jeremy Kane, 9:18.81), and the 200 Butterfly (Matthew Pierce, 1:49.00). A bright spot for the Notre Dame men was the 3-4 finish in the 100 Breaststroke by sophomore Dan Szilier (59.51) and senior Steele Whowell (1:00.13).

The Cardinal women defeated the Irish by a score of 150-103. Stanford swimmers Misty Hyman and Shelley Ripple both qualified for the NCAA Championship in March in the 100 backstroke and 200 Butterfly, respectively. The Cardinal also set pool records in the 400 Medley Relay (3:46.66), 100 Breaststroke (Elin Austovall, 1:03.63), 500 Freestyle (Jennifer Foschi, 4:49.11), and 100 Butterfly (Catherine Fox, 55.95). Notre Dame woman swimmers who stood out were: freshman Kelly Heckling (1st in 100 backstroke, 2nd in 200 backstroke), freshman Allison Lloyd (3rd in 100 breaststroke), sophomore Carrie Nixon (2nd in both 100 and 200 freestyle).

Both Notre Dame teams return to action next Friday, October 9th as they host the 12 team Notre Dame Relays at Rolfs Acquatic Center.
