Sweet Named ACC Player of the Week for Third Time This Season

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Notre Dame senior outfielder Abby Sweet was named the ACC Player of the Week, her third weekly conference honor this season, for her performance last week vs. Valparaiso and NC State.

Sweet is the only ACC softball player to win the “Player of the Week” honor multiple times this season (also March 2, March 16). She joins Duke pitcher Peyton St. George as the only two ACC players to win weekly honors three times this season (St. George has been named Pitcher of the Week three times).

Sweet, the ACC’s leader in batting average (.538), continued her dominance at the plate in the midweek vs. Valpo and the series sweep of NC State, batting .600 on the week. She totaled six hits, three runs, two doubles and four RBI on the week, adding a stolen base.

Sweet, a team captain, took a whopping six HBP in the doubleheader vs. NC State Saturday. Four of the HBP came in one game, as Sweet was hit by a pitch every time she was at the plate that game. Her four HBP in a single game are the most taken by any Division I player this season.

For the week, she earned a .750 on-base pct. and a .800 slugging pct.

Sweet is one of the nation’s best at the plate, ranking among the top not only in the ACC, but across Division I softball.  Sweet’s .538 avg. leads the ACC and ranks sixth in the nation, while her 42 total hits are first in the ACC and tied for fourth in the nation.  She also leads the conference in doubles (10, sixth nationally), on-base percentage (0.591, 14th nationally), runs per game (1.08), slugging percentage (0.936, 19th nationally) and total bases (73, 12th nationally).

Sweet and the Irish will next take the field Wednesday, March 31, hosting Central Michigan, before traveling for a four-game series at Florida State April 2-4.
