Sweet Named ACC co-Player of the Week

NOTRE DAME, Indiana — Notre Dame Softball senior outfielder Abby Sweet has been selected as ACC co-Player of the Week for her performance in the Liberty Classic, announced Tuesday. Notre Dame went 4-1 against RV Liberty and Villanova on the weekend.

It is the second weekly conference honor of Sweet’s career, and first of the season for the team captain. Sweet was named ACC co-Player of the Week on Feb. 25, 2020, after her showing at the Mary Nutter Classic.

At the Liberty Classic, Sweet racked up a whopping 20 total bases, compiling nine hits, four doubles, two triples, a home run, two RBI and nine runs through a 4-1 go for Notre Dame. Also earning two HBP, Sweet led the Irish with a 1.176 slugging percentage. On the weekend, she posted a .529 batting average, second on the team only to junior outfielder Emma Clark (.600).

Sweet leads the ACC in runs per game (1.17) and is tied for the lead in season doubles (5), ranking seventh in the nation in that category. Her season batting average is second in the ACC (.487), and her 19 total hits in 2021 also rank second in the conference and tied for 17th nationally.

The senior’s on-base percentage is third in the ACC (.535), as is her slugging percentage (.846). Through 12 games in 2021, the senior has touched 33 total bases, tied for second in the ACC, and her three total triples also rank second in the conference.

RV Notre Dame is 7-5 through the first three weeks of play. Sweet and the Irish will rest for a mid-season open week March 6-7 before traveling to Chapel Hill March 12-14 for a four-game series with North Carolina.
