URBANA, Ill. – The University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team continued its solid showing at the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships Saturday, as the Irish posted a 5-3 record in singles and a 2-0 mark in doubles to advance an impressive group into Sunday action.
The standout doubles unit of Quinn Gleason and Monica Robinson are shining individually too, as they both qualified for the round of 16 in the main singles draw with victories over foes from Youngstown State. Gleason bested Dominika Lackova, 6-2, 6-4, while Robinson took down Marta Burak, 6-2, 3-6, 6-0. Gleason will meet Lox Sze Leung (Northwestern) Sunday, while Robinson will battle Lauren Chypyha (Wisconsin).
In doubles action, the duo will meet Grainee O’Neill and Anna Sanford from Ohio State Sunday in the quarterfinals after taking down Michigan State’s Erin Faulkner and Athena Truilloit, 8-6.
On the other half of the bracket, Julie Vrabel and Allison Miller also advanced to the quarterfinals with a close, 8-7 (7-3) win over Lauren Burich and Kelsey Grambeau of Wisconsin. They will next meet Klara Supejova and Andrea Martinovska (Eastern Michigan) for the right to go to the semifinals.
Elsewhere on Saturday, Vrabel, Mary Closs and Miller all saw their singles tournament end in the second round. For Miller, she had to advance through the qualifying singles bracket before making it to the main singles draw. After a first round bye, she went 2-0 in the qualifying bracket and won her first round match Saturday before suffering a loss in the second round.
