STJORN, Iceland – Notre Dame senior women’s soccer player Jenny Streiffer scored in the 22nd minute to lead the United States under-21 national team to a 1-0 win over Finland in the opening round of the 1999 Nordic Cup in Stjorn, Iceland. Irish senior goalkeeper LaKeysia Beene recorded the shutout in the net for the Americans, who next face Germany on Wednesday in the second round of the eight-day, eight-team international competition. Irish senior Jen Grubb started in the midfield for the U.S. and played in the first half.
The U.S. outshot Finland 13-3 in the contest. Beene recorded two saves while Finnish goalkeeper Johanna Levosalo saves eight shots. Streiffer’s unassisted goal came from 20 yards out from the left side into the right corner of the net. Beene, Grubb and Streiffer each are making their third appearances at the Nordic Cup.
