Streiffer Helps U.S. Beat Denmark 3-0 At Nordic Cup

FJOLNIS, Iceland – Notre Dame senior Jenny Streiffer scored an insurance goal to help the United States under-21 women’s soccer team shut out Denmark 3-0 on Friday in the third round of the 1999 Nordic Cup in Fjolnis, Iceland. Notre Dame Jen Grubb also contributed to the win as she started and played the entire game in the midfield. Irish senior goalkeeper LaKeysia Beene helped preserve the shutout by playing in the net for the second half after recording a 1-0 shutout against Finland in the first round.

The U.S. wins Group 2 with a 3-0-0 record and advances to the championship round where they will face Group 1 winner Norway in the gold-medal game for the third consecutive year on Sun., Aug. 8. The U.S. won the 1997 Nordic Cup 1-0 over Norway on an overtime goal by Streiffer but lost 2-1 in the 1998 gold-medal game.

“It’s nice that the pressure of the first round is off of us,? said Streiffer. “Now we have one game to focus on. Norway is always a challenge that we look to and we’re glad to have the opportunity to reclaim the championship from the team we lost to last year.?

Streiffer, who scored the game-winning goal against Finland, headed a rebound off a shot that ricocheted off the back of a Danish defender and scored from three yards out in the 62nd minute. Streiffer leads the Americans in scoring with two goals and one assist in the three games. The U.S. outshot Denmark 10-3 in the contest and had five corner kicks to Denmark’s two.
