MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Senior Adrianna Stasiuk (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) managed to attain her 12th double-double of the season by hammering 19 kills and scooping 13 digs as the University of Notre Dame volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (30-26, 20-30, 30-25, 31-29) contest to Marquette on Friday evening at the Al McGuire Center.

Rallying behind Stasiuk were sophomores Serinity Phillips (Valley Center, Calif./Valley Center) and Megan Fesl (Arlington Heights, Ill./John Hersey), who finished with 16 and 10 kills, respectively. Freshman Kellie Sciacca (Monument, Colo./Lewis-Palmer) was able to block seven shots, while Phillips and sophomore Tara Enzweiler (Raleigh, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) each got a piece of five attacks.

Freshman Angela Puente (Redondo Beach, Calif./Bishop Montgomery) had a team-high 15 digs. Sophomore Jamel Nicholas (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) had 23 assists and senior Ashley Tarutis (Long Beach, Calif./Los Alamitos) led the Irish (7-9 overall, 3-3 BIG EAST) with 29. Marquette setter Katie Weidner had 53 assists as the Golden Eagles amassed 62 kills in the four-gamer.

Notre Dame bettered Marquette (7-8 overall, 3-3 BIG EAST) with a hitting percentage of .247 for the match, compared to the Golden Eagles’ .238 mark. The Irish have out-hit their opponent on eight occasions this season, coming out victorious in six of those decisions.

Notre Dame and Marquette each had 18 kills in the opening act, though the Golden Eagles broke loose from a 15-15 tie with four unanswered scores. Notre Dame came within a deuce (21-19) on Ashlee Fisher’s attack error, but three-straight points from the home squad gave Marquette a five-point buffer.

In game two, Stasiuk’s roller put ND ahead, 7-4, and junior Justine Stremick (Langdon Area, N.D./Langdon Area) partnered with Enzweiler for a block on the next play to double-up the score on Marquette. Back-to-back kills by Phillips forced a Golden Eagle timeout with the Irish leading by eight (21-13), and Stasiuk’s dagger would give ND a nine-point zone (24-15). After seeing that lead dwindle to five points (25-20) the Irish let loose with blocks by Stremick and Enzweiler, then Nicholas served up a pair of aces to lock the gate on a 30-20 win.

A forceful Irish defense finished with 6.0 blocks in the game while Marquette failed to record a single rejection. On the attack, Notre Dame clicked with its top single-game percentage of the match (.353) while holding the Golden Eagles to a .029 clip.

Things seemed to be going Notre Dame’s way in game three as it took a 16-12 lead with Stasiuk’s kill, but the spread narrowed down to a single point when Marquette’s Kimberley Todd delivered a converted strike (24-23). Enzweiler chimed in with a kill to put ND back up by two, but Marquette mounted a 7-0 jaunt to pick up the win.

The squads battled to the tune of 19 ties and 11 lead changes in the final frame. Enzweiler’s kill marked the first knotted score (8-8), and Stasiuk kept the Irish alive with a pair of bullets to draw the game at 20-20. Nicholas set up Stremick for a kill when Marquette faced its first game point and tied the frame (29-29), but an Irish service error put the Golden Eagles back up by one before Jenn Brown’s kill wrapped up the win.

Notre Dame goes to Syracuse on Sunday (Oct. 14) to finish a two-match conference road trip.
