Champaign, Ill. – Senior Chris Staron’s victory in the men’s high jump was the highlight performance of the day as the Notre Dame track team competed in the Central Collegiate Championships track and field competition Saturday at the University of Illinois in Champaign. Staron (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) won the high jump with a clearance of 1.98 meters (six feet, six inches).
Due to the inclement weather that plagued the Midwest Saturday, the Irish sent an abbreviated roster to the competition as 20 student-athletes (11 women, nine men) competed for Notre Dame in the meet. The Irish originally planned to send a full squad of 51 athletes (27 women, 24 men) to the meet but decided against it, settling for performances by athletes who needed qualifying marks for upcoming competition in the BIG EAST Championships and the NCAA Mid-East Regional meet. Predictably, the throwing events produced the most notable performances by the Irish on Saturday as they were the events least hindered by the rain, sleet, wind and snow flurries.
In the women’s shot put, Meghan Horn improved her ’05 season best and BIG EAST qualifying standard with a toss of 14.05 meters (46 feet, 1 ¼ inches). In the men’s hammer throw, four Notre Dame athletes produced ’05 bests: Chip Roberts (54.60m; 179-2), Kyle Annen (53.26m; 174-9), Garet Koxlien (49.94m; 163-10) and Mike Shubert (39.18m; 128-6).
