The Notre Dame baseball team picked up two more BIG EAST Conference weekly awards, as junior centerfielder Steve Stanley (Upper Arlington, Ohio) earned player-of-the-week honors while senior righthander Danny Tamayo (Miami, Fla.) earned pitcher-of-the-week accolades for their performances during the week of April 15-22. It was the second honor of the season for both Irish players.

Stanley led Notre Dame during the 4-0 week with team-best totals in batting average (.571, 8-for-14), runs (9) and slugging percentage (.929) while adding his first career home run, four walks, three RBI and a pair of stolen bases.

Tamayo pushed his season record to 6-1 and dropped his ERA to 1.61 (11th-best in the nation) after picking up the victory in a 15-2 game with Villanova. He took a no-hitter into the 7th inning before allowing the only hit of his eight-inning stint, a solo home run. Tamayo also walked just one Wildcats batter while posting six strikeouts and 10 groundouts. He faced four batters over the minimum (28) while his economical 89-pitch outing included 64 strikes (71%).

Notre Dame players have combined for five of 13 BIG EAST player-of-the-week awards this season, including two each by Stanley (also on Feb. 26) and sophomore rightfielder Brian Stavisky, plus one by senior shortstop Alec Porzel.

Tamayo (also Feb. 26) and fellow senior righthander Aaron Heilman join Seton Hall’s Shawn Tarkington as the only repeat BIG EAST pitchers of the week this season.

Stanley’s week also included no errors, no strikeouts and no double-play groundouts and he hit 6-for-11 in the three-game sweep of Villanova. He reached on 6-of-10 leadoff plate appearances during the week and hit 2-for-4 when batting with 2 outs.

In the 7-1 opening win over VU, he singled and scored in his final three ABs (the first coming with 2 outs) before coming a double shy of hitting for the cycle in the 15-2 nightcap. He then walked twice and scored twice in the 8-3 series finale. In the earlier 6-4 comeback win over Central Michigan, he went 2-for-3 with 2 walks and a run scored.

Tamayo-who did not allow a hit from a lefthanded Villanova batter (0-for-19)-has won his last six decisions while his last six outings have produced 47 Ks and just 6 walks. His BIG EAST stats include a 1.16 ERA, 4-0 record, 37 Ks and 5 BB in 38.2 IP (with a .196 opp. avg.).
