NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame men’s and women’s fencing squads will not compete this weekend at meets in New York City as sever winter weather gets set to hit the East Coast starting Friday.

Saturday’s St. John’s Invitational Cup has been cancelled. Sunday’s St. John’s/NYU Invitational Cup may still be held, though the Irish will not compete as they return to Notre Dame on Friday.

The Irish were to meet some of the nation’s best squads over two days at Taffner Field House in Queens, New York, but Winter Storm Jonas is expected to affect areas of the mid-Atlantic region ranging from northern Virginia to Long Island between late Friday and Sunday morning. New York City is under a blizzard warning and is expected to get between 12-18 inches of snow.

Notre Dame will return to action next Saturday and Sunday when the Irish compete at the Northwestern Duals. The Castellan Family Fencing Center will serve as the host site for the Wildcats’ event, as Northwestern’s Henry Crown Sports Pavilion undergoes renovations.
