PERSONAL INFORMATION

  • Began his college career as an offensive lineman at Springfield College (Mass.) before transferring to East Stroudsburg, where an injury ended his playing days

COACHING ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • A 38-year coaching veteran who has coached offensive line at the FBS or NFL level for 31 seasons. Hiestand head’s into his second stint and seventh overall year at Notre Dame in 2022.
  • In his first six years in South Bend, he had six offensive linemen selected in the first three rounds (Quenton Nelson, first; Ronnie Stanley, first; Zack Martin, first; Mike McGlinchey, first; Nick Martin, second; and Chris Watt, third).
  • Over the 11 NFL Drafts (2002-12) prior to Hiestand’s arrival at Notre Dame, only two Irish offensive linemen were drafted in the first three rounds and not a single one since 2007.
  • Of the six lineman drafted, three of them were selected in the Top-10 picks of the draft (Nelson – 5th, 2018; McGlinchey – 9th, 2018 and Stanley – 6th, 2016).
  • Nelson was the highest drafted Notre Dame player since Rick Mirer was selected second overall by the Seattle Seahawks in the 1993 draft.
  • Prior to Nelson in 2018, Stanley was the highest-drafted Notre Dame offensive lineman since 1969.
  • The Irish averaged 207.6 rushing yards per game in 2015, including six games with 200+ yards (Texas, Virginia, Georgia Tech, UMass, USC and Stanford).
  • Notre Dame’s average of 5.63 yards per carry set a modern (post-WWII) school record, which held until the 2017 set the current record (6.3).
  • Four pupils were chosen in the 2014 NFL Draft — Zack Martin (first round) and Chris Watt (third round) of Notre Dame and Tennessee’s Ja’Wuan James (first) and Zach Fulton (sixth).
  • Mentored a unit that allowed just eight sacks in 2013, which ranked tied for second in the FBS in fewest sacks allowed.
  • Guided an offensive line in 2012 that nearly helped the Irish average over 200 yards per game in both rushing and passing, which had previously happened only twice in school history (1977, 1970).
  • Coached offensive line for two years at the University of Tennessee (2010-11).
  • Mentored the Volunteers offensive line unit that allowed only 18 sacks while attempting 400 passes in 2011—and only Alabama, among conference schools, allowed fewer sacks.
  • Inherited a Tennessee offensive line group in 2010 that featured only one player with starting experience and that amounted to only three career starts.
  • Guided three true freshmen on a 2010 offensive line that helped Tauren Poole rush for 1,034 yards and tie for the SEC lead with six 100-yard rushing games.
  • Spent five seasons coaching the offensive line of the Chicago Bears (2005-09).
  • Member of a coaching staff that not only helped the Bears win division championships in 2005 and 2006, but also advanced to Super Bowl XLI following the ‘06 season.
  • Guided a pair of players to Pro Bowl honors while in Chicago — Olin Kreutz (2005 and 2006) and Ruben Brown (2006).
  • Helped Kreutz in 2006 become the first Bears’ offensive lineman to be named first-team All-Pro in 17 years.
  • Coached the offensive line for eight years at the University of Illinois (1997-2004).
  • Held the title of assistant head coach for his final five seasons in Champaign (2000-04).
  • Tutored 12 All-Big Ten selections on the offensive line, and every senior starting offensive lineman in his first seven years with the Illini signed with an NFL team.
  • Developed six offensive linemen into NFL Draft picks during his tenure at Illinois.
  • Coached the offensive line for three years at the University of Missouri (1994-96).
  • Mentored four All-Big 12 selections on the Missouri offensive line in 1996.
  • Spent five years coaching the offensive line at the University of Cincinnati (1989-93).
  • Held the title of run game coordinator and the duties of offensive coordinator in 1993.
  • First coaching job at the FBS level was at Toledo with tight ends in 1988.
  • Coached the tight ends at Ivy League champion Penn (10-0) in 1986.
